The Weaver podcast episode 1: Charlie Kratovil pt. 1

Central Jersey Socialists · Episode 1 – Interview w/ Charlie Kratovil (Editor-in-Chief at New Brunswick Today)

It is with great pleasure, we bring to you the first episode of our new podcast series interviewing local figures connected to our fight in Central Jersey.

Our first guest is Charlie Kratovil, editor in chief of New Brunswick Today. Join us as we discuss past student movements, the changing media landscape of the city, why he chose to run for mayor, some of the difficulties of competing against the local Democratic Party, and the inner workings of one of the last holdouts of Tammany Hall – The Cahill-Lynch Machine.

All that, plus more on the first episode!

Here is a transcript for this episode of the Weaver:

*Intro*

“The Weaver is brought to you by the Central Jersey Socialist’s Theory and Education Committee.”

Nishad: Hello and welcome to the first ever episode of the weaver, a new multimedia project presented by you, the Central Jersey Socialist. I am your host, for the morning, afternoon, or evening depending on when you choose to listen to this, Nishad Datta. Now, if you have been involved in organizing in New Brunswick and to some extent Middlesex county and New Jersey at large, then you have undoubtedly come across this guest in some way shape or form. Here with me is none other than local activist, community organizer and editor in chief of new brunswick today, mister Charlie Kratovil. Charlie, welcome.

Charlie: Thanks Nishad, a real pleasure to be here and honored to be on the first episode. Thanks for having me.

N: Thank you for being here. So first things first, tell us about the newspaper, what inspired you to found new brunswick today?

C: I came here to go to Rutgers and got a degree in journalism and media studies. I did not anticipate actually working in that field but the more i learned about it the more i learned how important it was and how it has influenced the history of our planet and country. I took more of an interest in it and graduated in 2009 and by then had already gotten very involved in activism and organizing here in NB and I saw some of these shady practices of the power structure. And I started to notice over time how lacking the local coverage was. Once there was a robust media ecosystem that was really not serving especially areas like NB and I knew this because I was going to the government meetings and seeing really important and significant struggles and developments and getting little to no coverage for any of those things. So I saw an opportunity to fill and serve the community but I didn’t immediately do that. I got a job at a local non profit to start a paper in paterson and that’s what gave me the confidence to be able to try that in our city here. I worked with one of the best journalists in the state, getting Paterson Press up and running there and learned how to cover a big city and get people to trust ya, and talk to ya,  and read what ya write. And then when i moved on from that it only made sense to try that here and it has been a great success.

N: Did you originally intend to focus on investigative journalism and community organizing efforts or did that happen organically?

C: Yeah, so I was really blessed to go to Rutgers at a time when there was a really strong student movement that was interested in doing more than just supporting students but actually tried to build those bridges to our neighbors, the rest of NB and we were able to give the political machine here a run for their money in the 2009 elections and really ultimately it was a beautiful thing to work with people in every neighborhood.  I was interested in doing more than just, you know, supporting students but actually trying to build those bridges to our neighbors, the rest of New Brunswick and we were able to give the political machine here a real run for their money in the 2009 elections. Really, ultimately it was a beautiful thing to work with people in every neighborhood, all different backgrounds, old, young, students, non-students, and so that was an amazing experience. We didn’t know how good we had it back then because now it is really hard to put together those kinds of movements.  So, that experience really drove me to want to pursue a lifelong commitment to organizing and in seeing how the media was struggling to cover some of this stuff because the media outlets were constantly having turnover, NJ has always been in a poor position because we don’t really have our own TV stations as much as NYC or Philly. So just seeing this kind of stuff is one of the moments that really made me decide to get more incovlved in the journalism side was seeing the tragic murder of Barry DeLoatch, who killed this unarmed man, just a couple blocks from where i live now. And seeing what amazing movement came together out of that but the media coverage was just kind of like they would parachute in, do a story and be gone the next day. There wasn’t the follow up the accountability that we needed so sorely. That was the moment that I decided that we have to start our own media outlet and that can dovetail with the organizing from time to time but certainly there was a void, a necessary thing, probably why you’re starting this multimedia project here. People need to have the facts and be educated in order to make a difference and get organized.

N: So you mentioned back when you started there was a more robust media ecosystem here and I know of the only papers that really align with anything that I personally am interested in is your paper (New Brunswick Today) and El Americano as well. Even the “Home News Tribune” is a shell of what it used to be, so what are some of the institutions that are no longer here that you are referring to?

Elections & Constitutional Review, T-Shirts, and more….

Good afternoon comrades,

As you are aware, tomorrow we are going to have a special meeting for the elections and the accompanying constitutional review. I have yet to create the polls on the voting booth because I have some relevant updates that I’d like to share with you, and because I’d like to list the positions and nominees for those positions as well as their duties as described by the officers in those positions where possible.

First I must start with rescinding my first proposal from last week’s meeting to formally merge our Labor Relations committee with our Theory & Education committee. I have a multitude of reasons for this, not the least of which being that as a communist organization, it is our duty to not only include labor in our guiding ideology, but in our praxis as well.

Practically speaking, the committees do not cost us anything and do not drain each other of any sort of resources to speak. It behooves us to maintain our organizational structure rather than obscure that organizational structure, even if it is for the sake of holding co-chairs accountable for inactivity. But this has always been the long game, and should be a tenet of any self-respecting socialist organization.

Along with some long-needed voting reforms to be discussed at Sunday’s meeting, Labor Relations co-chair Liam has guaranteed me a renewed commitment to our efforts and involvement in organizing the working class, starting with a meeting to work on the “Immigrants Are Not Taking Your Jobs” pamphlet in our Meeting Room at some point this week. The time and other details are still TBD and will be announced it in the #labor channel.

This renewed commitment also comes with the news of Labor co-chair Chris’s agreement to step down from his position so that current sitting Theory & Education David can step in and help. David obviously is probably one of the most qualified people around when it comes to understanding the intricacies of running a CJS committee, but more importantly, has experience in staging workplace actions in New Brunswick during his time in the food service industry.

It was a mistake on my part to impose such a massive change to the way that the organization should formally and ideally work without consulting the people who the bulk of the work would fall on, so I take full responsibility for that.

Now, without further ado, our nominees for election:

  • General Secretary(vacant seat): Arly
  • Mutual Aid(vacant seat): Pat
  • Treasurer(vacant seat): Danny
  • Outreach Officer(if Arly is confirmed): Ming
  • Labor Relations: David
  • Theory & Education: Johnny

The vote to confirm them will begin after this Sunday’s meeting.

12/27’s passed proposals:

  1. the creation of a Direct Action Committee. Ming and Danny have nominated themselves for officership.
  2. Having co-chairs attend other committee meetings as a requirement for officership
  3. Collaboration with Food Not Bombs Asbury(and having Doris speak at one of our general meetings)

Tentative Action Plan for the Week:

  1. Sunday, 1/3 @ 8PM – Constitutional Review/Election Confirmation meeting(optional, attendance not mandatory, but important org business)
  2. Next week @ TBD – Labor Relations meeting
  3. Next week @ TBD – Mutual Aid care package assembly
  4. Sunday, 1/10 @ 8PM – General Meeting(with a focus on Lincoln Annex fight)
  5. Monday, 1/11 @ 7PM – Lincoln Annex Parking Deck Demolition planning board public hearing

And be sure to pre-order a t-shirt! Thus far, Pat is the only person who has put in an order! If we don’t get enough pre-orders, we won’t be able to get any made!

In solidarity,

Nishad

Shirt pre-orders!

Finally, they are here! Central Jersey Socialists t-shirts!

This is only a pre-order for the shirts, as we will not know how many to order until we have the pre-orders in, but it’s very exciting nonetheless!

In order to pre-order, just send the money to CentralJerseySocialist@gmail.com (singular) as a “gift” on PayPal to avoid fees. If you are simply picking it up in NB, just send $10 and your name if it’s not already on your account. If you want it shipped, send $15 and put your address in the ‘memo’ section.

Either way, please make sure to include your size in the menu!

Lincoln Annex Parking Deck Planning Board Hearing, November 29th Meeting Notes, and more!(archived from 12.8.20)

Good afternoon folks!
As the weather gets colder, daylight becomes more precious, the holidays roll by, and we move to Discord for our general meetings, it’s gotten a little bit more difficult to organize as quickly as we have in the past. Not to worry though – there are some ongoing fights that are ramping up now, and here’s how we can get involved in them:
This Sunday, December 13th, we will be taking our general meeting to Zoom so that we can have it open to the public as we will be joined by our honorable comrade Charlie Kratovil. He will be addressing us and providing a tactical plan of action for the Monday, December 14th Planning Board hearing for the Parking Deck portion of the Lincoln Annex School demolition project. Please join us and make sure to tell your friends. Will send a follow-up email with a flier for the meeting.
In other news, we now have a PayPal account! So if you know someone who’s been trying to donate to us, please direct them to the account associated with this email address! This will be good in case the proposal to have our donations matched by Chubb Insurance goes through – as they only match contributions that have a paper trail(this means, unfortunately, cash is out of the question). We also have our Cash App account that is specifically for Mutual Aid, $CJSocMA.
The following proposals were put forth at the 11/29 meeting:

  1. Joining the Edison for Racial Justice Central NJ Coalition
  2. Food and Toy giveaway for the Holidays
  3. Chubb Insurance contribution matching
  4. Electing Johnny as our Marxist Center delegate
  5. Zoom meetings to plan our Solidarity Rally on off sundays
  6. PayPal Account

And remember, we had a homework assignment – to talk to at least one person who has previously expressed interest in membership and having them come to the next general meeting! This, along with the ideas to flyer at Brookdale and Middlesex community colleges should help grow our numbers. We can also join ongoing local protest movements! Lindsay, Danny, and I attended a rally in Hackensack to protest against the horrible conditions that ICE detainees at Bergen County Jail have been conducting a now 25-day long hunger strike against. This is definitely something we can get more involved in and more heads out to with our flags.

Meeting in Hazlet and many, many updates!

Good afternoon comrades!

We had an extremely long meeting last time! We had something like 12 proposals pass in the time between Charlie’s address to us and the arrival of Pete for his street medic training. A few of you voted online, and this will be an option for anyone who is unable to attend meetings from here on out.

The Fight For the Lincoln Annex School:

The day after our own marathon meeting, a few of us were on ANOTHER marathon meeting – this time it was the public hearing for the Planning Board for the project that intends to demolish the Lincoln Annex School. Charlie, when he came to our last meeting and gave us the lowdown, said that if we were able to get 30 people on the call, ask enough questions, and use enough public comment time, that we’d be able to get the meeting past 10:30 and delay the Planning Board’s vote on the project at least until its next meeting.

As it turns out, at its peak, the meeting had 106 participants on the call. There were three witnesses to be cross-examined: Christian Roche(pronounced like the bug that he resembles), the civil engineer for the project, Ken Drucker, the chief architect, and traffic engineer Daniel Disario. Thankfully, enough people were able to cue themselves up for questions(after a few hilarious mishaps where the county officials struggled to properly moderate a zoom call lol) that we did not even get to Disario. We ended up staying on the call until 2AM!

Next Planning Board meeting is November 9th at 7PM. We need to get twice as many people on there if we can, and coordinate it a little better so that we know what kinds of questions to ask, have talking points ready, and be able to do this kind of thing in shifts. We were on that call for a good SEVEN hours, and judging by the disdainful manner in which they treated us, I’m not gonna put it past them to try and have another marathon meeting to get to a vote ASAP.

We only have one witness this time, so we should aim to get at least 200 people on this next meeting. These don’t have to be people who live in New Brunswick or even New Jersey. They just have to be people who believe in the fight and believe in our cause – and they have to be willing to speak for their whole 5 minutes. I’m going to speaking to Charlie this week and see what we can do. Thankfully, one of our new agit-prop officers, Pat, has been working on some stuff for us to support the fight!

Again, the next public planning board hearing will be Monday, November 9th at 7PM!

Mutual Aid

We have given out approximately 21 of the care packages we assembled together. We had planned to make some more this past Tuesday, but there wasn’t enough cohesion to make it happen, and pretty much everyone(myself included) forgot. No matter, we can get together at some other point that can be decided upon at the meeting. We authorized the use of dues money totaling $100 to buy hand warmers for more care packages, and plastic bins for people to store their stuff at the Riverwalk. Thanks to some contributions from Matt, Pedey, and myself, we only had to use $64 of the dues money. Meaning, that there is a surplus of $36 that we can use towards getting stickers made or something like that. We can leave that up to a proposal at the meeting.

Our comrade Jorrell has been teaching free martial arts classes at one of the baseball fields(location #8 on the official map) at Buccleuch Park. They are extremely knowledgeable and helpful, and open to anyone of any level – beginner, intermediate, or advanced. The class meets Tuesdays at 4:30PM and Fridays at 10:30AM. Please come wearing comfortable shoes and clothing! You will have to move around a lot, and it’s a good workout!

Our first collaboration with the United Methodist Church was a success. Tons of meals were made and we are going to do it all again this Sunday at 5:30. Please hit up Danny or use the new #united-methodist-church channel on our Discord server. It’s under the Mutual Aid category.

Proposals Passed:

  1. the creation of a Conflict Resolution/Mediation Working Group for general grievances, on a case-by-case basis.
  2. authorization for the use of $35 for Mutual Aid
  3. a burner phone
  4. November 8th clothing drive – bring your stuff to the meeting this Sunday if you have it, if not, get in touch with Ming.
  5. Establishing contact with the organizers of the New Brunswick Community Fridge
  6. Collaboration with the Refuge Center
  7. Use of dues money($100) for hand warmers and plastic storage bins
  8. Making a group venmo(this is contingent upon getting the burner phone)
  9. the creation of two Agit-Prop officer positions.
  10. the creation of working group structures. These are essentially smaller, more specific-in-nature committees that only meet on an as-needed basis, rather than weekly.

And finally, a reminder, our meeting this Sunday will be at our regular meeting time (8PM), but it will take place in Hazlet! If you need a ride from New Brunswick, I have three spaces in my car, and will be leaving the United Methodist Church at 7PM. You can hit me up, or let me know in the #meeting-plans channel. And if you live elsewhere and wanna get a carpool going, please feel free!

We Are Unstoppable….

Good evening comrades!

This past Sunday(10/4), we had what was probably our best meeting yet! The group is continuing to grow in numbers, in dues payments(we started the meeting with $104, now we have $264), in the scope of our projects, and in the number of groups we are now working with. We are building an unstoppable coalition, and we did it together!

Mutual Aid:
This meeting was all about our mutual aid work. We had representatives Justice and Anthony from Shiloh join us for the first time, and they are doing some fantastic work in and around New Brunswick. I look forward to a bright future collaborating with them.

At the riverwalk, some of our crops at the Guevara Garden are beginning to sprout, including cucumbers and spinach. We are continuing our efforts and working on our presence down there. We’ve also made contact with an individual who has spent a lot of time with the folks down there. We still need plastic bins to keep clothes and possessions safe from the elements, so if anyone has some to spare, please bring them to the next meeting, along with coats, hats, socks, and any warm winter-weather clothing.

At the Discord meeting Tuesday, we decided to appoint Danny as our point-person for our work with the United Methodist Church and their multitudinous meal distribution and houseless aide programs. We need people to show up there every single day, from 5:30PM-7PM. If you want more information, feel free to hit him up on our Discord server, or in the #mutual-aid channel. He has his number listed there as well if you need to contact him.

Theory & Education:

At the general meeting, we passed a proposal to create a physical theory library. If you have any books to put up for anyone else to borrow, please check out this Google Doc we’ve created to keep track of what we’ve got, and what’s lent out already. The point-person for this is Pat! There’s also a new channel on the Discord server specifically for the Libary.

We are continuing our work on the instagram posts. If you have not submitted your images and blurbs yet, PLEASE do so as soon as possible! Just email our Outreach Officer Arly. Her email address is arlyroserubens@gmail.com and she can also be reached on our Discord server as well as directly through the instagram account itself(@centraljerseysocialists).

The Theory & Ed committee has also taken on the task of creating a new pamphlet to distribute with care packages and at the riverwalk on poverty, houselessness, and addiction, and we began to assign roles for the pamphlet at Wednesday night’s 9PM Discord meeting. If you would like to get involved, please attend the next meeting. The goal is to have it finished by the end of the meeting. Time and day are yet to be determined, but as always, more information is available on the #theory channel itself.

Finally, we concluded the Theory & Ed meeting with the reading of the first few chapters of Origin of the Family, Private Property, and the State by Friedrich Engels.

Passed Proposals:

  1. Collaboration w/ Shiloh(unanimous)
  2. Collaboration w/ United Methodist(unanimous)
  3. Shirts & Bandanas + use of $40 donated to Mutual Aid
  4. Martial arts classes by Jorrell(unanimous)
  5. Collaboration w/ Marxist Center
  6. Physical Theory Library(unanimous)

Additional News:

There are now new channels on the Discord server for the #library and #voting-booth where we will be holding any and all voting matters that must occur the the time in between general meetings.

We will continue to make changes and updates to the website and Discord server as we take on new projects and missions.

And finally, one of our newest members Ming has agreed to become the point-person for our work with the Newark coalition that organized this successful anti-ICE rally.

Our next general meeting is Sunday, October 18th at Cookie’s Jar. Please note that we are meeting at 4PM this week so that we may have as much daylight as possible! Pete D’Antuono will be joining us for a masterclass in medic training, so we need as much daylight as we can get.

Points of Action for Now:

  • Hit up Danny to put in 5:30PM-7PM shifts at the United Methodist church
  • Attend riverwalk cleanups and other assorted projects down there
  • Help Theory & Education committee out with instagram posts and pamphlets

In solidarity,

A Warm Welcome to Our New Recruits!

Good evening comrades,

We had a big weekend. We made our presence known at Tormel Pittman’s BLM rally, led by Terrance Floyd and with special guest speaker appearances by Zayid Mohammad and Larry Hamm. Their speeches were incredibly moving, and I’m glad we were able to send representatives of our group. Huge thanks to the Theory Committee for making the pamphlet for us to hand out – it was really well-made and had a good little primer on capitalism and its inextricable ties with police brutality.

For those of you who joined us for the first time at the meeting the following night, a quick introduction to the group: we are a multi-disciplinary(all are welcome) Marxist group that aims to do the true work of socialism: that is to say, the work that is often difficult, time-consuming, and not necessarily sexy. In order to have a successful revolution, we must have a strong foundation of mutual aid, labor and tenants’ rights organizing, and of course a clear and focused ideology. Our area of focus is the 6(and a half, if you count the very top of Ocean County) counties of Central Jersey, namely, Middlesex, Monmouth, Mercer, Somerset, Hunterdon, and Union counties.

As of right now, we chiefly operate out of New Brunswick, with a bi-weekly general meeting, and weekly Theory and Mutual Aid committee meetings in person and on Discord, depending on the meetings. Unlike many of the groups associated with the area, we aim to be the first-of-its-kind radical leftist group that is uncompromising in its message and is concentrated on organizing the proletariat and the new left. This is not a group that is comprised chiefly of university students or other such bourgeois intellectuals who are not interested in praxis. And it’s not a group that gets bogged down by too strong a focus on the work of any one of our individual committees.

We use dialectical materialism and completely horizontal, democratic participation from all of our members to come up with the ways in which we instantiate Marxist theory. What we do not partake in is adventurism, as we are no use to our class or our comrades if we are dead or in jail, or electoralism, as we believe the capitalist class will never truly capitulate to our demands with the way things currently are in our country.

Most of our organizing work is done on our Discord server. If you are interested in any of our individual committees’ projects, drop into their channels and ask away. Currently, our Mutual Aid Committee, chaired by Kate and Eric, are making headway in their Rt. 18 Riverwalk cleanup project, and have amassed a huge Food Pantry with tons of contributions of non-perishables and other goods for open and free use and consumption. Our Theory and Education Committee has thus far read The Communist Manifesto, Wage Labour & Capital, and has done work on a number of pamphlets that will soon be available on our website. Make sure to introduce yourself on the #welcome-and-rules channel when you join!

Proposals Passed At The Last Meeting:

• Collaboration with Food Not Bombs
• Discount on Annual Membership Dues – $20, down from $24 at the regular rate of $2/mo.
• General assembly working with Theory & Ed to create working class history and other assorted infographics
• Coat drive for the impending winter weather

Mutual Aid has pretty much completed their clean-up of the Albany St. side of the Riverwalk, and are ready to begin planting garlic, spinach, and lettuce in the area by the underpass. They will be collecting coats and other warm articles of clothing at the next meeting, and please bring any plastic bins or other weatherproof containers as well. Many of the houseless community have told us that one of the biggest issues they have down there is keeping everything in tact from rain and humidity. Plus, we will be able drop our coat drive collections there from time to time. Additionally, we are trying to put our own trash cans down there, as the city has all but abandoned theirs. Finally, we are almost ready to start distributing our care packages. For more info on what the Committee needs before they are able to distribute them, please use the Discord server.

Theory & Ed is going to be synthesizing a pamphlet of new material based off of their readings of the Manifesto and Wage Labour & Capital in addition to their collaboration with the greater group at large. They will also be working on a glossary of Marxist terms that will soon be available on the website. The next reading will be an essay by Friedrich Engels on family structures and the way they exist in different cultures. Their meeting has been pushed back to this Wednesday at 9PM on the #meeting-room channel on Discord.

Lance gave his informative speech on Rojava, complete with a handout with all of the information he presented. Jon-Luc gave their presentation on the concept of New Urbanism and why it relates to us as socialists and radical leftists. And I gave a brief primer on the indigenous movements in Bolivia and how they are fighting back against the white, fascistic interim government, plus the fantastic news that Jeanine Áñez and her ‘Democrat Social Movement'(see how far right movements LOVE stealing our verbiage?) pulling out of the upcoming election. ¡Viva Evo Morales!

That just about covers it. Once again, thanks very much to all of our new members for joining us. You all bring something new and unique to the table and I look forward to collaborating with you all in building the future that we deserve to live in. And of course, thank you to all of our dues-paying members for showing up and continuing to fight the good fight!
